My Story

Founder Sarah Carroll Kelly & Senior Maker Ava O’Shea at Showcase Ireland 2022

The moment I discovered my first lock of grey hair I knew it was now or never. The result is Shock Of Grey, which is hand-crafted, sustainable, but bold and beautiful at the same time. Just like you!

I’m Sarah Carroll Kelly and my company is Shock of Grey. I make bold, unique, handcrafted statement jewellery from unpredictable materials, such as wood, brass, plastic, silicone and acrylic. My pieces show off your ‘True Vibrant Self’ through bold, bright vivacious colours and playful shapes. We us FSC certified wood, Low emissions paint and every piece comes in recycled boxes with eco friendly fibre as padding. Pieces are designed, wood cut and painted and pieces are constructed and built in my studio in Dublin 8. Wherever possible other parts are sustainably sourced. My background in both Sculpture and Digital design provided the foundations for making mini wearable sculptures.

Features and Award Nominations

We have just won the International Buyers Choice Award at Showacse January 2024. My work has been featured in Hello Magazine, Nationwide, the Irish Times, The Today show on RTE, Irish Country Magazine, Irish Independent, Sunday Business Post, Social and Personal, The Gloss, RSVP, Sunday Business Post, RTE Guide, Irish Examiner and the Sunday World.

I have been nominated for 3 awards in 2022 as both a Sustainable Business in the Chambers Ireland Award and the Irish Made Awards in the Jewellery Division, IDI Awards in the fashion accessories category and in 2023 for the Irish Business Design Challenge Award for our work as creating a sustainable product. We won a Commendation at the 2023 awards for our Eco Friendly Collection.

Shock of Grey was selected to take part in Shoppe Object in New York and as a result the Contemporary Museum of Modern Art in New York now supply our pieces in the stunning store, as do Artspace in NYC, Irish Design House in Toronto and Wolf and Badger in London. Our home stockists include Design Ireland in Terminal 1 and 2 at Dublin Airport, Om Diva drury St, IMMA, Forest and Flock, Ardmore Pottery, Leitrim Design House, and Foxford Woollen Mills.

In 2023, we took part in London Fashion week and are just back from IMMA Earth Rising Festival doing 4 days of sustainable workshops.

I live in Dublin 8 with my husband, 2 sons and 2 cats, not necessarily in that order.
